Meghan Markle & Prince Harry met some delegates at 2022 One Young World Summit, Manchester UK as Meghan opened the event

Meghan and Harry travelled by train from London to Manchester, UK today. First meeting with some of the delegates attending the 2022 One Young World Summit, before Meghan gave a speech to officially declare the summit open.

Founded by David Jones and Kate Robertson the One Young World organization is a global community of young leaders, corporate partners and other supporters from every single country, whose purpose is to connect and bring together young and talented people and ensure that their concerns, opinions and solutions are heard and taken into account by those in power, whether by governments, businesses or in any other sector.

Meghan and Harry were given a rapturous welcome as they entered Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Meghan was welcomed to the stage as a counsellor for the One Young World organization, a position she has held since 2014 (before meeting Prince Harry).

Following other key-note speeches by the former President of the Republic of Ireland, Mary Robinson, and a rousing speech by musician and activist Sir Bob Geldof, Meghan gave a speech to official open the summit.

Meghan started off by saying it "was nice to be back in the UK" and nice to be back with One Young World delegates, some of whom she and Harry had met earlier in the day. Meghan spoke of her attendance at previous summits: 2014 in Dublin, 2016 in Ottawa, 2019 in London and now this summit. Reflecting back to the 2014 event in Dublin Meghan said she had to pinch herself and ask herself "what was she doing here." Surrounded she said by word leaders in politics and business, she was just "the girls from Suits" - a nod to imposter syndrome that successful people often have.

Without mentioning the Royal Family and steering away from anything that might be considered political, Meghan said how by the time of the 2019 summit her life had dramatically changed. She was now married and a mother, something which gave her an expanded view of the issues facing the world and concern for what the world would be like for her child.

Meghan continued in her speech to ask the delegate to consider the future but also the here and now, saying the present was equally important and adding that delegates were already doing good work.

Meghan ended saying she was privileged to meet and to stand beside this year's delegates urging the audience that your time is now, and to embrace the moment that is now. Meghan then declared the summit open.

The summit is seen as a chance for the attendees to learn and to network and to have their own work promoted. Being invited to attend a summit is a pass to lifelong membership of a global network.

This year's summit was due to be held in Tokyo but was moved to Manchester due to on-going pandemic concerns in Japan. The mayor of Manchester, Adam Burnham, also attended the opening ceremony and he gave a speech welcoming the delegates from over 190 countries to the city. Some of the musical and other cultural performances at the event were by artists that hail from the city.
