Highlights from Invictus Games The Hague – Day 1 Events for Meghan Markle & Prince Harry
Meghan and Harry are in the city of The Hague in the Netherlands, getting ready for the start of the Invictus Games. The couple made their first appearance at an event where the world's media were present, at a special Friend and Family Invictus Games reception.
Prince Harry has always seen the friends and family of the Invictus competitors as an essential element to the Games, wanting friends and family to share in the Invictus experience, and to recognise the key support role that friends and family play in the rehabilitation of wounded servicemen and women.
The Invictus Foundation provide funding to allow at least two friend and family members to accompany each competitor to the Games, which covers
the costs of accommodation, transportation costs in country and access
to the competitive events.
On the way to the Friend and Family event, Meghan and Harry
were escorted to the venue by Team Netherlands’ competitors and their family,
one of whom was carrying a newborn. However, when the weather grew colder
during the walk, Meghan kindly removed her coat and give it to the mum of the
baby so that she could keep her newborn warm.
Prior to the Friend and Family meet up Meghan and Harry met members of the USA and Ukraine's teams hosted by The Hague’s US Embassy. The Ukrainian team gifted Prince Harry with a calendar from the organization Come Back Alive. The Invictus Games Ukraine team manager discussed the importance of “having a voice” with Meghan, something Meghan knows all too well.
The delegation from Australia also had a gift for Harry,
continuing their tradition of gifting Harry a pair of skimpy swimwear that read
"I Am Team Aus."
